Search “personal trainer near me” anywhere around Royal Oak, Troy or Birmingham and you’ll find dozens of options: big-box gyms, boutique classes, franchises, independent trainers, PT clinics that offer training. Prices range from about $35 to well over $100 a session.
The difference between a trainer who changes your life and one who just counts reps usually comes down to a few things you can ask about up front.
1. What are your credentials?
Look for a nationally recognized certification such as NASM, NSCA, ACSM or ACE, or a degree in exercise science or athletic training. If you have an injury or chronic pain, ask about specialized training: corrective exercise certifications, athletic training licenses or clinical experience.
2. How do you start with a new client?
A good answer involves an assessment: how you move, your injury history, your goals and your schedule. If the first session is just a hard workout, the program isn’t being built for you.
3. How will we measure progress?
“You’ll feel better” is nice, but you deserve numbers. Body composition scans, strength benchmarks, movement re-tests and photos all give you proof that what you’re doing is working.
4. How do you handle injuries and pain?
This one matters more than most people realize. Listen for specifics: how they’d modify exercises, how they’d progress you and whether they’ll coordinate with your doctor or physical therapist. “Just push through it” is a red flag.
5. Will I have my own program?
In a class, everyone does the same workout. In good semi-private or private training, you follow a program written for you, even if others are training nearby.
6. What happens between sessions?
Most of your week happens outside the gym. Ask about nutrition guidance, habits, sleep and what you should be doing on your own.
7. What does it cost, and what’s included?
Premium coaching costs more per session than a gym membership or a group class. That’s fair if it includes an assessment, individual programming, technique coaching on every rep and support between sessions. Make sure you know exactly what you’re paying for, and ask whether HSA or FSA funds can be used if you have a qualifying condition.
Try before you commit
The best way to answer all seven questions is to experience a session. Most quality gyms offer an assessment or intro session so you can see how they coach.
At DANNOFIT, that’s a complimentary 60-minute assessment: an InBody scan, a movement screen, a coached session and a sit-down to map out your plan. We’re in Madison Heights, a short drive from Royal Oak, Troy and Birmingham. Book yours here.
